2022 Rousset Crozes Hermitage rouge

2022 Rousset Crozes Hermitage rouge

$23.00

This entry level Crozes rouge was tasted from assembled tank, from several hillside parcels high and low. In a darker fruit register than the 2016, with light telltale N Rhône hallmarks of cured meats, spice, and olive, with a bit more chewy grip than its 2016 counterpart, this continues its value hound supreme value, and will make a fantastic everyday option.

“Bright violet. Lively dark fruit and floral pastille scents are complemented by suggestions of allspice, olive and smoky minerality. Shows very good clarity and depth on the palate, offering energetic blackberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that become sweeter with aeration. Finishes with gentle tannic grip and very good persistence, leaving a subtle candied violet note behind.” 90 Josh Raynolds for the 2016, NOT THE 2017 OFFERED HERE

Description

Just like the 2015/2016 and 2019/2020 renditions, this one is a back-up-the-truck, holy-shit kind of a wine, particularly for its everyday value. In its sappy dark red fruit allied to effortless bright levity, full of subtle savory/olive/herb/floral notes, weighing in the low 13s% alcohol, each and every component of this that I tasted had my eyes bugging out of my head with OMFG. Everything is here, from fruit, to floral, to mineral, to meaty/savory. One needn’t only buy the “big guns” to get exceptionally good Northern Rhone wine of precision, fullness, and finesse. I think that the balance of concentration and freshness will allow these 2022 reds to all age for a very very long time, if you have the patience/inclination to do so……This is an annual 6pk/case buy no brainer.

“1) (vat, foot of slope at Erôme) ***(*) dark red; the aroma is open, raspberry-herbal, neatly sweet. The palate holds lightly crunchy red fruits, herbaceous late on, has notable life, also cut, the fruit tasty, shapely, licorice on the finish. 12.8°. 9 years 2) (vat, mid slope at Erôme, hard granite) **** bright red-purple colour; black cherry that lingers on the nose, some reduction. The palate serves a bright cascade of black fruit, is very tasty, holds good streamlined tannins that are well entered. Good life, verve here 12 years 3) (225-litre casks, the high slope of Méjans, the last plot harvested, 1970s Syrah) ****+ dark robe; the nose is fine and flourishing, leaves a trail of black cherry, is harmonious. There is much refinement on the palate, which is fluid and well juiced, with the entry of powder tannins right on cue, a fresh angle from them and a note of finesse also. This is racy, has class, balance, is very good. 18 years 2039-41 Feb 2023” Four Stars John Livingstone Learmonth
