Description
From what has to be considered the benchmark single site on the Mullay Hofberg hillside, Thorsten has always made this wine in a Spätlese style. This 2022 has some 10g/L acidity, the highest level of acidity for this bottling in 20 years….! I found it to be absolutely thrilling in its delicacy, purity, and length; I asked him on the spot if I can have 10cs plus of it, something that I rarely do…..When the folks at Mosel Fine Wines published their review a few weeks after my visit, I smiled. A little * awarded here, get what you can justify and thank me later….!
“The 2022er Reiler Mullay-Hofberg Riesling Spätlese Schäf was made from fruit harvested from 70 plus-year-old vines in the prime south-facing sector in the heart of the vineyard at 86° Oechsle and was fermented and matured in Fuder down to sweet levels of residual sugar (72 g/l). The nose is captivating in its complexity and finesse, with very fine residual notes from its spontaneous fermentation which make the nose very floral and airy, with delicate notes of lily flower, lavender, fine spices, whipped almond cream, bacon-driven smoke, acacia, candied grapefruit zest, and cherry blossom. The wine has gorgeous creamy elements on the delicate and layered palate. The finesse is stunning, even though the sweetness already plays into Auslese category. The finish is intense and mouthwateringly refreshing. What a beautiful Spätlese! 2032-2052” 94 Mosel Fine Wines
