2022 Henri Magnien Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru 4 Carac’Terres Magnum

2022 Henri Magnien Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru 4 Carac’Terres Magnum

This is a particularly unique animal, created by blending a bit of each of the four premier crus from the Combe de Lavaux, all vinified with 100% whole cluster and aged in a single barrel. This is undoubtedly a remarkably complex animal, with all kinds of nuance and contrasts. It is in its ebryonic phase now, and promises a very cool evolution ahead…..a little * awarded here.

“The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 4 Carac’terres 1er Cru uses 100% whole bunches and is matured in new 300-liter barrels. Those stems inevitably impact the nose with a healthy sprinkling of cracked black pepper, almost, but not quite, dominating the fruit expression. The palate is medium-bodied, with red peppercorns interlacing the black fruit. Quite structured with a good grip towards the finish, there may be just a little austerity emerging as it opens in the glass. This will definitely require several years in bottle.” 92-94 Neil Martin

“(the cuvée name references 4 different parcels or terroirs, which in this case refers to the domaine’s four 1ers; 100% whole cluster, 100% new wood). Moderate wood frames the slightly redder fruit profile that is laced with abundant spice and floral scents along with hints of earth and humus. The medium-bodied flavors are admirably concentrated and refined if a bit less powerful while delivering good length on the precise and well-balanced finish where the wood resurfaces. I very much like the texture and this should age gracefully. (91-94)/2033+” Allen Meadows ————> thingy, meaning, “particularly outstanding for their respective appellations and especially merit your attention”

“All whole bunch, one new 300 litre barrel. To show that he can! A slightly lighter colour at the rim, perfumed, smoky, grassy, alpine strawberry, something of everything. Deliberately a totally different style of wine. Not for everyday perhaps, but a fascinating wine to take a look at from time to time, the ebullient fruit fills out the middle palate, and the finish is particularly persistent. A small cuvée like this does not crush the whole bunches by their weight. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023.” 92-94 Jasper Morris “Four Star” wine

“As usual, the 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 4 Carac’terres is a blend of selected grapes from the domaine’s four premiers crus, vinified without any destemming. Bursting with notes of petals, sweet red berries, baking spices and orange rind, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and suave, with melting tannins and a saline, perfumed finish.” 92-93 William Kelley
