To my taste and sensibilities, this is a sensationally good wine, Classic with a very capital C…..This is the third vintage of Christina’s pet project that she began once fully “in charge” of the vinifications here, selecting the best of their Bernkasteler Lay vineyard and aging it in a new fuder (barrel), as traditionally the entirety of the important estate wines are aged in very very old fuders. The Lay vineyard is a long, narrow band of vineyard at the bottom of the hillside, yet still at about a 50% steep slope, extending to the northern border with Graach. There is very little soil here, and lots of deep blue slate, which is why this is a particularly delicate, airy, and finesse driven creature. Many of the vines here are single pole trellised. To my taste, this approaches some version of idyllic perfection in its sense of supreme balance, precision, and sense of class. I gave Christina huge compliments on this one, as it is truly as good as it gets. Trust me and get a 6pk/case…..a little * awarded here.
