Description
The Hengelberg is Stefan’s monopole site from the opposite side of the river and into the side valley there. It is quite high in elevation, and with pretty full sun exposure. It is very rare that anyone knows anything about this place, which Stefan’s mind blowing examples are changing, fast. In 2021, the yields were an unbelievably low 10 hl/ha, and the resultant wine shows it. Like the Dhroner Hofberg reserve, this is like an essence of an essence of a wine, so compact and layered, it is truly remarkable. When tasting this wine from 2019/2020 and now 2021, the analogy of a dry wine with Pfalz wine power and Mosel finesse seems quite appropriate. This is truly a monumental wine. Just watch it get 98-100 points, again, just like it did for the past two years……A big ol’ * awarded here. It is, like the Hofberg Reserve, the richest wine in the range at 13% alcohol. The balance is remarkable.“A nose of the ripest peach with a whiff of grapefruit pulls you into this dry riesling black hole that leads you to another universe of flavor. Unbelievable concentration is married to a body that’s at the upper edge of medium-bodied. Mind-blowing energy drives this over the palate at a staggering clip. The nervous system struggles to keep up with all this drama. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.” 99 Stuart Piggott
