2021 Michel Mallard Corton Rognet Grand cru

2021 Michel Mallard Corton Rognet Grand cru

$125.00

Just plain WOW. Rognet is always more concentrated with fuller body than the Marechaudes, which in ’16 is plain gorgeously, succulently so. Its sense of silky texture and oh-my-god purity, all delivered without any sense of excess weight is pure class in a glass to my taste. Again, an archetypal knock out of an example that will age brilliantly. A little * awarded here.
“The 2016 Corton le Rognet Grand Cru, which as slightly more whole cluster than the other red grand crus from Mallard, has more opulence than the Marechaudes but perhaps not quite the same degree of finesse and mineralit√©. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe black fruit tinged with marmalade and licorice, bold in style but everything kept in check by the acidity. It feels very long on the finish, but I would like to see it evolve more grace.” 90-92 Neil Martin

“A very interesting nose is also brooding and only reluctantly exhibits hints of the exotic that include sandalwood and mandarin orange along with more typical notes of essence of red currant, earth, spice and ample floral influence. There is a wonderfully sleek texture to the impressively-scaled flavors that possess first-rate mid-palate concentration while delivering excellent persistence on the bitter cherry-inflected finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. One to consider provided you have the patience to cellar it for at least 6 to 8 years first. 92/2031+” Allan Meadows

Its sense of silky texture and oh-my-god purity, all delivered without any sense of excess weight is pure class in a glass to my taste. “The 2021 Corton Le Rognet Grand cru, which contains 70% whole cluster, has a very backward bouquet at the moment. It unfurls gradually with dark cherries, hints of cassis and crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium bodied with fine grained tannins and lovely balance. The most cohension appears towards the finish, which has a little more persistence. Very classic in style, I think this will age with style in bottle.” 93-95 Neil Martin

“The 2021 Corton Le Rognet Grand Cru is the king of the cellar this year, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries and sweet spices, followed by a full-bodied, ample and layered palate that’s fleshy and broad-shouldered, with impressive depth and density for the vintage but also all of the year’s inherent charm and finesse.” 92-94 William Kelley

“Subtle but easily perceptible wood nuances lurk in the background of the aromas of herbal tea, black cherry and plethora of floral wisps, and in particular violet. The sleek and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors also exude a bracing minerality before terminating in a moderately austere, balanced and built-to-age finale. (91-93)/2033+” Allen Meadows
