2020 Michel Mallard Corton Renardes

2020 Michel Mallard Corton Renardes

As it typically is, my favorite of the trio of Corton wines, as it just has an extra dimension of complexity, a bit more savoriness and kiss of wild. This wine presents even more amplitude than the Rognet, with its fruit sappiness like some kind of magical essence of red cherry nectar. Absolutely undeniable class in a glass, a wine to load up on and thank me later, as Grand crus of this qualitative caliber at anything resembling this price are quickly becoming the things of fairy tale lore. A little * awarded here, a wine that I requested mags of on the spot…..Have I made myself clear…?? (my note for the 2016)

“The 2020 Corton Les Renardes Grand Cru is superb, bursting with aromas of cherries, red berries, sweet spices, bergamot and peonies. Full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it’s layered and vibrant, with a deep core of fruit that almost entirely conceals its structuring chassis of ripe, powdery tannin, concluding with a long, saline finish..” 94-96 William Kelley

“The 2020 Corton Les Renardes Grand Cru showed just a little reduction on the nose, but opens with aeration to reveal vivacious red fruit, dessicated orange peel and floral scents, more exuberance than the Les Maréchaudes. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. Lovely symmetry and poise from start to finish with a precise and quite persistent finish. Superb.” 94-96 Neail Martin

“(from a .75 ha parcel). A slightly more deeply pitched and earthier nose reflects plenty of floral influence along with wood and menthol hints. The is a beguiling texture to the tension-filed, detailed and more mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that also conclude in a firm, serious, austere and moderately rustic finale. This is very Corton in character and a wine that’s going to need extended keeping before it will be ready for prime time. (92-94)/2035+” Allen Meadows
