Description
I’ve always been a huge fan of Pommard Chanlins since Nico Rossignol’s version taught me just how stunningly finessed an upper slope Pommard can be, sitting right on the Volnay border. This is a wine that the Lafouge’s have used as a test batch for the effects of using large amounts of whole cluster, and the spicy whole cluster accents definitely lend it aromatic/flavor complexity. Pretty damn good…..
“A slightly cooler and fresher nose freely offers up its aromas of mostly red currant and cherry along with wisps of lavender, rose petal and tea. The sleek, delicious and beautifully refined medium weight flavors brim with minerality on the balanced and impressively lengthy finish. This isn’t as austere as it usually is though even so it’s going to require at least 6 to 8 years to become reasonably approachable. This too is quite good and worth checking out. “The 2017 les Chanlins from the Lafouge family is a great bottle of Pommard in the making. The bouquet is pure and exudes impressive elegance out of the blocks, wafting from the glass in a mix of quince, red cherries, pigeon, raw cocoa, mustard seed, cedar and a very complex base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and impressively pure and soil-driven, with a rock solid core, fine-grained tannins and a very long, tangy and nascently complex finish. This is one of my favorite premier crus in Pommard and Gilles Lafouge has fashioned an exceptional fine example here in 2017. 2028-2075. 93+.” John Gilman for the 2017, NOT THE 2020 OFFERED HERE
“The 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins unfurls in the glass with aromas of sweet red fruits, citrus rind, wood smoke and dried flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with excellent concentration and depth at the core, compelling purity of fruit and satiny structuring tannin. This is an admirable Chanlins that will offer very keen value.” 91-93 William Kelley for the 2017, NOT THE 2020 OFFERED HERE.
