When touring their amazing new winery, I noticed a few neutral concrete eggs in their red wine aging section, and asked which wines they are used for. Simone mentioned that half of them are used for Syrah, and the other half for a curious native variety called Portugieser made with the very first vines that their father had planted some 50+ years ago. The variety gets very little respect in the region due to its most common use as an overcropped and sickly sweet rosé wine; no one seems to try to maximize its potential qualitatively as for the German market, Portugusier = cheap & shitty sweet pink wine. Well, they collectively decided to see what they could do to maximize such potential, as their fathers vines are really quite good, and they wanted to honor both him and the long abused native variety. Sooo, after we finished tasting at the winery, I asked if I could check out “the egg wine” and we went back to the family house. Simone opened a bottle (which happens to be sealed with a wax capsule) and GOOD GOD is the stuff outrageously deeeeelicious! In deeeep dark blueberry toned fruit, of moderate density, silky texture, and wonderful freshness, it was mind blowingly tasty, like nothing else i’ve ever tasted; their example is dry and dark, but just oh so juicy and delicious. It is grown in sandy gravelly soil, which is why its name is Sand und Kiesel, literally sand and gravel, and it has the kind of textural finesse one so often finds from sandy soils. I simply have to include it here in this offer, as its pleasure quotient is bonkers and will delight one and all with its intensity and fruity charms. When I saw the price just now (the first time that I have looked it up on their pricelist) it makes it all the more of a ridiculous overachieving value, as there is so much joy for the money…..trust me and take dive, this stuff will make you say yuuuuummmmyyyyy!!!! ;0 A little * awarded here.
