From what has to be considered the benchmark single site on the Mullay Hofberg hillside, Thorsten has always made this wine in a Spätlese style. This 2022 has some 10g/L acidity, the highest level of acidity for this bottling in 20 years….! I found it to be absolutely thrilling in its delicacy, purity, and length; I asked him on the spot if I can have 10cs plus of it, something that I rarely do…..When the folks at Mosel Fine Wines published their review a few weeks after my visit, I smiled. A little * awarded here, get what you can justify and thank me later….!
“The 2019 Reiler Mullay-Hofberg Riesling Spätlese Schäf is noble, intense, very elegant and refined on the floral and flinty-slatey nose that seems to bear an iron fist in all its charm and finesse. On the palate, this is a frisky, juicy, very piquant, fresh and salty Spätlese with a greatly stimulating finish. The residual sugar of 85 grams per liter comes juicy and fruity onto the palate and is almost absorbed by the distinctive mineral grip and acidity. A gorgeous wine. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.” 94 Stephan Reinhardt of robertparker.com
