2019 Jean Pierre Guyon Vosne Romanée 1er cru les Brulées

2019 Jean Pierre Guyon Vosne Romanée 1er cru les Brulées

At the top of the hierarchy, we find nothing but best-in-class, as-good-as-it-gets examples. From the first whiff of dark red fruits, intense purple florals, spice, and struck match stick smoky mineral reduction so very typical of les Brulées (the upper slope delight that it is), this screams class and classic. It has knee buckling gorgeous dark red fruit purity, precision, tension, and elegance of its components, with the subtly smoky mineral intensity on the ever rising finish leaving me in fits of painful beauty. I could wax further, but trust me when I say that this is quite simply as good as it gets. From 60+ year old vines. A little * awarded here. Jean-Pierre calls this one a sanglier (wild boar) for its wilder qualities, versus the delicacy of the 1er Orveau which he refers to as a biche (deer)……

“Intense imperial purple. The bouquet is notably finer than in 2018, which had the burnt flint feel, this is fresher with a little bit of fresh, clean champignon de Paris. Otherwise it is all about a deep red fruit with a couple of black fruit notes. Superb persistence with waves of detail. Wonderful length. Not a shy wine, but I would recommend accepting its invitation! Tasted: November 2020”

“The 2019 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and raspberries mingled with blood orange, sweet spices, raw cocoa and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, deep and enveloping, it’s sumptuous and charming, with an ample core of lively, concentrated fruit, beautifully refined tannins and a long, perfumed finish.” 93-95 William Kelley
