Again, the theme of knee buckling beauty and class continues with this oh-so-deliciously-fascinating contrast with the 1er cru Orveaux. In fact, Isabelle (Jean-Pierre’s wife) told me that when tasting this, she compares it to an emotion like tasting petit Jesú dans des culottes de velour (baby Jesus in velvet underwear), or as some Belgian clients put it more crudely, like drinking the peepee of baby Jesus….. ;0 It is that kind of seriously profound, emotion provoking pleasure….This is from contiguous vines in the Orveaux portion of the Echezeaux Grand cru, and you can sense clear as day the merits of the hierarchy. Even deeper in aromatic and flavor depth, with all things amplified a bit in their intensity, both floral, fruit, and mineral. This is an essence of upper slope Echezeaux; once again, this is reference point good….a little * awarded here. This is plain incredible wine at its transcendent best.
2019 Jean Pierre Guyon Echezeaux Grand cru
“Imperial purple. The bouquet is divinely sumptuous, ultra floral in power mode, the most intense of roses that you could imagine. A heavyweight that is light on its feet, (stings like a butterfly and floats like a bee?) The spice at the finish keeps this fresh and delicious. Very long indeed. Tasted: November 2020” 95-98 Jasper Morris “Five Star Wine” HIS HIGHEST SCORING ECH OF THE VINTAGE, HIGHER THAN ROMANÉE CONTI, COMTE LIGER BELAIR, MUGNERET GIBOURG. Arnoux-Lachaux scored 96-98……
“The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is brilliant, soaring from the glass with scents of exotic spices, wild berries, plums, rose petals, raw cocoa, peonies and blood orange. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it’s deep and complete, with supple tannins and a gourmand, enveloping core of fruit, concluding with a long and mouthwatering finish. This is the finest Echézeaux I’ve tasted from Guyon.” 95-97 William Kelley
