Alex’s personal favorite wines, the wines that he consumes the most in his personal life, are the fruity styled wines. He has broadly been recognized as being particularly masterful with Auslese+ level wines, which each of these will show you and then some. Alex describes his Auslese as intended to truly be drinking Auslese wines moreso than dessert wines, a feat that is very tricky to achieve, as it requires a masterful sense of precision and balance to really make them appetizingly dance. To my taste, JJ Prüm is one of those masterful examples, and we now have another that we can add to that register. If you adore great Auslese, or if you would like to better understand what delicious versatility gorgeous dancing Auslese can offer, it simply does not get better than this for the money, from anywhere…..both the 2019 and 2020 !!!
“The 2019er Apotheke Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the front part of the label, was made from early harvested and partially botrytized (10-20%) fruit at 100° Oechsle in the Laurentiusberg part of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (86 g/l). It shows a beautifully elegant and refined nose of vineyard peach, white flowers, anise, herbs, pear, smoke, and candied lemon. It still proves on the sweet side on the palate, but already shows some its future greatness as the hugely long and spicy finish hints at great depth and freshness.
