As we get into the Mercurey 1er crus, this is the heart of the production, as he has six hectares in Mercurey, 80% of which is 1er cru. The Croichots is a 30 year old S/SE facing vineyard of decomposed limestone marne, and limestone. In the vineyard, there is a vein of particularly limestone rich marne that is quite white in color, and that is where his vines are located. This is quite rich and fine at the same time, with an even greater sense of charm than the Montagny. Bruno calls this one “le charmeur”. This is more on the white florals and white fruits than the Montagny, a clear result of the limestone presence of the vineyard. This is undeniably charming and classy.
“Bruno Lorenzon likes to distinguish between his ‘charming’ cuvées and the more structured ones – Les Croichots comes into the charming category. The grapes are grown on the lower slopes, exposed south-south-east. Like the Montagny this has a fullish colour but with a stricter nose, “Japanese pear” according to Bruno, with oak apparent again on the nose There are spices too but complemented by a warm succulence, backed by just the right acidity. Typical good weight. Tasted: February 2020” 90 Jasper Morris
“Aromas of apricot, fresh peach and golden orchard fruit introduce the 2018 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Croichots Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping wine that’s elegantly textural and charming. It’s the most giving and open-knit white in Lorenzon’s very serious portfolio this year.” 91 Willam Kelley
