This bottling of a different portion of the Champs Martin, named after his sister Carline, is from a deeper soiled portion of the vineyard, with large limestone pieces. It has a deeper impression both aromatically and in the mouth, with a more earthy savory element, and almost a Côte Rôtie like olive note. This wine is perhaps more seductive and a bit more powerful, equally noble but in a slightly different profile. Man oh man, this stuff is nutso good. Bruno refers to this one by contrast as a “femme sur un fauteuil”, or a woman on a reclining couch……another little * awarded here.
“The 2018 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos de Champs Martin Cuvée Carline is another stellar performance from Lorenzon, mingling aromas of dark berries, cassis and plums with hints of smoked meats, orange rind, dark chocolate and exotic spices in a deep and seamlessly integrated bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, it’s deep and concentrated, built around powdery tannins and lively acids, its lively core of fruit complemented by inviting sapid, even carnal nuances. This impeccably balanced wine has an identity all of its own, but it could be seamlessly slipped into any tasting of the Côte de Nuits’ best.” 95 William Kelley
