From the east facing 1er cru at the exit of the valley that has given the town its namesake, this is class in a glass by any name, in a gorgeously succulent/supple dark red fruited style that is heart swoon worthy. This comes from the full length of the hillside top to bottom, with deeper red soils at the foot of the hill, becoming whiter as you climb up the hill. This presents spicier, darker red fruits than the Chapelle, that en bouche is toute en delicatesse flottante (all on floating delicacy).
Holy holy moly! The ’18s aromatics alone had me in fits of painful pleasure. My first tasting note: “Classy as F in its persistence of pretty dark red fruits, spice, and florals.” This is swoonworthy in its succulence and class, and will make an outstanding bottle in both the near and longer term. It is no small feat to have produced such gorgeous and classical wines in ’18 (13.4% alcohol for both of the Auxey 1er ’18s), as it is moreso the exception than the rule. But clearly, Gilles knew what he was going for, and nailed it……Take my word for and load up on these, in both ’17 and ’18…..mags too….you will thank me….(how many times have I said that before…..and how many times have I been right!!!?) A big time little * awarded here.
