This wee .55 hectare parcel has a fun story behind it….From the tippity top of the Beaune hillside, above the Clos des Mouches, on pure marne blanche soils with limestone beneath. In the era of Thierry’s grandfather, this was just forest, thought too austere and cold of a locale for growing grapes. His grandfather was approached by Felix Clerget (ancestor to young Thibaut Clerget) who had asked him if he could buy the parcel so that he could build a hunting shack, maybe keep his horses there, you know, a rustic outpost. Well, the clever Clerget had other plans, in fact, hoping to dupe Violot into letting it go for a song, and then planting grapes there. Grandpa Violot didn’t fall for it, eventually clearing the forest and planting red grapes there, which Thierry replanted to white about 20 years ago. I found this to be plain tremendous in its fresh bright citrus aromas with excellent concentration rendered positively mouthwatering and complex by the undeniable calcaire (limestone) signature of eye opening intensity; this stuff shimmers in most crystalline fashion….This is a little gem and then some……a little * awarded here.
