Elisabetta adores Burgundy, and is a member of the Chevaliers du Tastevin (she stays with Ch de la Maltroye’s Jean-Pierre Cournut every year…). With her oak aged Carato, she gives her best nod to the place that she says is the be-all-and-end-all envy of the wine world. The balance and classicism of the superlative 2016 vintage is on full display, this being the single highest rated wine in her recent issue on San Gimignano…..
2017 Montenidoli Vernaccia di San Gimignano Carato
In her words: “The free-run must from the best vineyards, which ferments in barrels and ages on the lees for 12 months. Wood contributes to the complexity of the secondary aromas, developing, over time, a richness of flavor and taste that brings to mind citrus and honey.”
Food pairings: ” Perfect with cheeses or richer dishes. It is also ideal for the evening, refreshing the palate after the fuller reds of an important meal.”
“The oak-aged Montenidoli 2016 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Carato (with 6,000 bottles made) opens to an off-gold color with some light amber highlights. This is an elegantly evolved expression that boasts dried apricot, candied orange peel and almond paste. The wine is texturally rich and creamy, with pretty highlights of saffron, cumin and toasted cardamom pod. This wine is one of the maximum expressions of Vernaccia that you can find.” 94 Moncia Larner (the highest scoring wine of the San Gimignano article she just published….) for the 2016, NOT THE 2017 OFFERED HERE.
