2016 Mosbacher Wachenheimer Gerumpel trocken Riesling Erste Lage

2016 Mosbacher Wachenheimer Gerumpel trocken Riesling Erste Lage

$25.00

The Gerümpel is presented as the last Erste Lage, and is the most expensive on their pricelist. This tells you what the Mosbachers think of this site/bottling…As mentioned earlier, the Mosbachers source this wine from the tippy top NW corner of the cru, right up on the Altenburg, where the soils are dominantly limestone, a somewhat exceptional example of the site that is much more commonly known for its bundsandstein peachy spiciness, as one finds at Bürklin Wölf, for example. My note: “WOW. In mineral extract, plain fantastic. With good stone fruit sensibility, this is complete and complex. This is awesome….”. A little * awarded here. From fairly young vines of 15 and 10 years, 13% alc. Get a 6pk/case, and thank me later….

“Ripe peach and roasted winter squash are underlain with wet stone and piquantly accented by peach kernel and toasted squash seeds in this fascinatingly earthy Riesling. There is a certain austerity to a finish that lacks the abundant primary juiciness characteristic of most Mosbacher 2014s. That said, the sheer length exhibited here is impressive. This originates in a parcel that nearly touches the Forster Musenhang, and its cooling proximity to woods combined with its soil’s high active lime content make for a Riesling that Sabine Mosbacher insists always needs time to emerge from its shell.” 90 points David Schildknecht for the 2014, NOT THE 2016 OFFERED HERE.
