2016 Gerard Boulay Sancerre rouge Cuvee Oriane

2016 Gerard Boulay Sancerre rouge Cuvee Oriane

I am delighted to hear that Gérard has made a third vintage of his house best Pinot Noir, named after his youngest Granddaughter Oriane. The concentration and surprising freshness of the solar 2015 vintage should produce an outstanding and ageworthy example if we look at the terrific 2012 inaugural cuvée or the 1990 as precedents. In his own words, about the 2014 version:

“The cuvée Oriane, which combines finesse, power and ageing ability, was born in 2012. It is named after my first grand-child, of the same vintage. It is a blend of two terroirs of kimmeridgean limestone in Chavignol dedicated since the middle ages to Pinot Noir; the hillside of Cheneaux which faces Clos de Beaujeu and Graveron, which is next to Mont Damnés. The harvest is completely de-stemmed then put in tank without pigeage or pumping over; with no intervention during vinification and fermentation with natural yeast. Aging takes place in barrels (50% new), without the additon of SO2. The Indian summer of 2014 gave us dense and ripe berries. This vintage of Oriane gives us a great fruit with cherry aromas, red currant and strawberries and some licorice notes.”
