Here is the exciting first step for young Sophie and Arnaud in the upper slope gem of les Barreaux. The parcel is the “upstairs” neighbor to Cros Parantoux, Richebourg, and Brûlées, as well as adjoining les Petits Monts. Arnaud elected to vinify the wine in a markedly different spirit than the wines of Domaine Sirugue by including 100% whole cluster, and ageing the wine in different barrels than those used chez Sirugue.
I had no idea this wine even existed when Arnaud excitedly showed it to me during our tasting of the Sirugue wines. In a family of strongly fixed generational roles, these few barrels are allowing Arnaud to make a wine that pushes his own ideas even further, untethered by the opinions of his elders….
I thought that the wine was tremendous in its intensity of spice, focus, and persistence of airy floral perfume. Arnaud is onto something here, as I can see why he pushed to be able to make a small cuvée of this oh-so-well placed, rarely seen villages parcel. I imagine that by the time the wine makes it to bottle, it will be even more impressive…..a little * awarded here.
