The Southern Rhone, Provence, and Corsica

  • This is sourced from two parcels 100% in Pignan, in Chateauneuf's cooler northern sector; this is where Chateau Rayas is located (half of Rayas is in Pignan).  The wines from this area are perhaps the most balanced and finessed in all of Chateauneuf, the truest expression of the 'pinot of the south' that Grenache can indeed be. Mounir set out to make a wine of Chambolle Amoureuses like proportion, and as I listened to the gorgeous rising finish in this wine that seemed to go on endlessly, I could only conclude that he has succeeded.  This wine is scheduled to be bottled in the fall, nearly three years after its harvest, whole cluster fermented, aged in three single large demi muids, with the same long lees aging regimen that is part of the Lucien LeMoine vinification style.  With the exception of Rayas and Bonneau, I have never tasted a Chateauneuf of this stature, in the Burgundian vein.  Mind blower and then some..... in stock.

  • 2013 Chateau de Pibarnon blanc- of the most noble white wines in all of Provence, a blend of pricipally Clairette and Bourboulenc, with a splash of Ugni blanc and Roussanne from vines that are 20+ years old. Richness and CUT. In stock.
  • Of the four different bottlings of Muscat that we tried, this one was hands down and unanimously the most complex and refined. From 60+ year old vines with tiny berried minuscule yields, only 600 bottles of this nectar were made, aged in two small feuillette barrels. This is about as good as Muscat gets, as far as I've experienced, in luscious honeyed intensity without any sense of cloying heaviness or alcoholic imbalance. This would be a great cheese course pairing, or perhaps with some Fiadone, the Corsican style cheesecake that isn't so dense and sweet. This is the kind of nectar that would put a smile on anybody's face, as it is just plain yummmmmy.
  • In the "luxury cuvée" sweepstakes, it doesn't get any better than this. This year's Papet (there was not a Papet produced in 2014) resumes the incredible track record for this wine, one of the best bottlings from any address in the appellation. Once you factor in the price tag, this is untouchable. I only wish I got more......A blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre. "Deep ruby. Pungent aromas of ripe red fruit, licorice, potpourri and black cardamom carry a bright mineral overtone. Pliant, sweet and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors, a hint of spicecake and impressive back-end energy. Fine-grained tannins add shape and gentle grip to an extremely long, floral- and spice-driven finish." 93-95 points Josh Raynolds

  • Classic elegance, every year. Bravo. From a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre, 4% other. In my opinion, this is the single best buy in the appellation, every single year. The house emphasis on elegance and harmony above all else is achieved with a regularity that is incredible. It seems as though this is the best rendition since the 2010, and is built in such a succulent, harmonious way that it will provide pleasure young and old. Like I say every year, get 6btls-a case of this and thank me later, as the track record for ageing here is rock solid. Quite simply as good as it gets!!! "Vivid ruby. Heady, mineral-laced red berry preserve, spicecake and floral aromas are complicated by suggestions of dusty minerals and pungent herbs. Lively, sharply focused raspberry and bitter cherry flavors become deeper and sweeter with air while picking up a musky licorice nuance. Shows impressive energy and thrust on the sweet, red-fruit-dominated finish, which is framed by supple, slow-building tannins." 91-93 points Josh Raynolds
  • "Deep vivid red. A complex and expansive bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, exotic spices, candied flowers and garrigue, and a smoky mineral topnote provides definition. Sappy and concentrated yet light on its feet, offering intense, appealingly sweet raspberry, spicecake and lavender flavors and a touch of sassafras, which adds earthy depth. Shows outstanding clarity and red fruit thrust on the extremely long finish, which is framed by supple, slow-building tannins." 94-96 Josh Raynolds
